Motor City From The 70's !!!!

"Basement of Motor City" { as told by ex Employee/Skater Steve Schang}

I am sure the stories were told about the pool down there, they were true. Motor City had a giant coal furnace to heat the building. In the 70's they switched to gas. I painted the whole basement white (except the filter room); it took a long time, and a lot of paint. It reminded me of a dungeon, and it was scary, but a lot of fun. The "Pool Room", was the old coal room, where the coal was stored before being used by the furnace. There was an automated belt that would feed the furnace from the coal room. Once the basement was painted white, Eddie decided to make the coal room a "Pool Room". Blocked off the door. made it about 4-ft high, water was heated from the furnace. "Rembrandt", Eddies picture/advertising person, painted a fish and other things on the wall. My memory's (60's) are of working a skating session, and Eddie telling me I had to go down stairs during a session and shovel coal in the coal room, that wasn't bad, but I was wearing a white shirt and tie, uniform at the time

I'm pretty sure that the following picture is the Skate World Speed Team the first year it opened... But Greg, Tim, Gerrianne Blavatt/Hahne, and me are all in this picture:

These are pictures of Greg. He was a pretty accomplished competitive skater, and like me, skated not only for Motor City, but also, at some point, for Skate World, Clawson, and Rolladium (Pontiac). All of the pictures below are from when he skated for Rolladium... In the first picture, he is being presented with an award, and congratulated, by my grandfather Shaw Hakim:

Mary Hakim (my grandmother), Bill Holliman (he owned Northland Roller Rink), my mom Anne Lewis/Hakim/Thomas, my dad, and a couple of more people including the guy (Armbruster) who owned (or still does?) Midwest Skate Company where most roller rinks in Michigan bought their skates and equipment from. A couple of people, on the left, I cannot identify.
My grandfather Shaw probably took the picture.
