My dad was John Guarnieri, Jr., an opera singer, and my grandpa was Johnny Guarnieri, the jazz pianist. His dad came to New York around the turn of the twentieth Century from Cremona, Italy where, or so the story went, his property had been confiscated by the Italian government on charges that he was a socialist (publishing the third largest socialist paper in the country). The story also goes that he had a celebrated affair with an opera singer in Rome, and both of them divorced their spouses and married each other, a bad non-no in those days, resulting in excommunication.
I have no idea what parts of the story are legend, and what parts gospel. Anyone else know?
Enjoyed this website, by the way. My husband and I visited Cremona, Italy years ago, loved the Guarnieri museum there, dedicated to the violins (another story, that my father was the first son, of the first son, of the first son all the way back to Giuseppe del Gesu himself), and had fun looking at all the Guarnieri's listed in the phonebook there.

What a wonderful family web site. I am attempting to keep your ancestors straight in my mind as I am viewing Christie's upcoming auction. There is a 1720(2) del Gesu being auctioned off. How I would love to own that violin. Does anyone in your family play or have any interest in luthier(y). Is anyone carrying on the wonderful tradition. I have been to Cremona where it all started, and was so impressed. Will return some day. Anyway best wishes to your family and this web site. Charles Bott

My family comes from Ozzola, near Bobbio. I have been extensively researching my family history and I have an ancestor by the name of Caterina Guarnieri who was born about 1700. She married Angelo Maria Columbano Bazzini, but I don't know her origins. Since Neirone is basically on the same road to Bobbio from Genoa, she may have been from your area. I've been to Torriglia, but many, many years ago. By the way, I love your website.

I recently inherited a very old violin from my father, who had inhertited the violin from his grandfather when he passed away. We always knew the violin was very old, and one day I had my private violin teacher look at it to see if I could repair it so I could play it. she noticed that the label was still visible at the bottom of the voilin, and used a quetip to clean the dust off. We discovered the violin was made in 1753. The maker is pretty hard to read, we can tell it starts with a G and ends in S, with other similar letters in between~do you think this could be one of your violins? We always knew it was old and probably valuable, but not that old. It would be pretty neat if it was one of yours.

I am not directly connected (blood) to the Guarneri Family but a brother of my maternal grandfather, born in Neirone (Giovanni Sudermania 1869-1961) named Stefano Sudermania 1867-1838) married a Rosa Guarnieri (1874-1923)---see tombstone marking. My grandfather married Rosa Rosasco in 1902 in Neirone. My mother Luigia Sudermania was born in Neirone (1905-1993)As a child in the 1930's I visited my grandparents and aunts in a house standing alone on the right side of the hill just before the town of Neirone. I was born in the frazione of Pezzonasca, comune Moconesi and attended school till the age of 13 in Gattorna. On july 12, 1939 I was taking to the US on the S/S Rex by my paternal aunt, leaving my two younger brothers and parents behind.

Bonjour du Canada, what pleasure to find this great site. It puts real, human and contemporary life to such a great ancestry. You are well justified to celebrate your respected family name. Thank you for sharing it with the world. I am one violonist who cherishes everyday the unique and mature sound of an early 18th century featherlight Guarnieri violin. I suffer from a form of sclerosis and I now play my violin propped up in my bed, giving a new meaning to "chamber music". It is not the best of concert halls, but I still manage to get a deep and clear, satisfying tone from my violin. I do not know what I would do if I did not have this sophisticated companion with me, thanks to your ancestors.

I just forgot to mention that, according to the national records office, my immediate family are the only people with Guarniere as our surname in the entire UK - currently myself, my brother, my mum and dad, and an aunt. Five out of 60-odd million - quite unique don't you think!

Just letting you know another Guarniere has stumbled on your site. My surname has been recorded as Guarniere in my family for at least the last four generations so goodness knows when it deviated from the Guarnieri spelling. We have little idea about our family history but we believe we were originally Italian Gypsies who settled in Brentford, London around the 1850s. I'd be interested to know if you can shed more light on my variati 15:41:21 (PST)

I stumbled across your site several years ago and was suprised to see my name in print. My Mother has compiled several books on our family tree. It is more like a hedgerow now. Anyway, a letter from my first cousin once removed, Edward Ochylski, came into my hands and pointed me in the right direction to see how our families are connected. It is a twisty-turny path:
http://www.tucker-usa.com/users/waurzyniak/guarnieri/default.htm
-> Lawrence Emerson Smith -> Patricia Ann Smith -> Joseph Vincent Skibinski -> Lawerence Schramm -> Michael Schramm -> Antoinette Schramm -> Clara Krawczewski -> Dolores Marie Ochylski -> James Albert Waurzyniak
Its a good day for a walk, Jim

Hello, I am a girl from the Netherlands. I can't write English very well, I am sorry for that. But my friend got a violin from Joseph Guarnerius 1726. She got it from a old woman. We don't know if it is a real one. But it is made in Cremona and the inscription says: Joseph Guarnerius Fecit + (it is a kind of cross) Cremona anno 1726 JSH. Do you know if it is your family or do you know how you can see it's a real one. Please send me information by mail. Thanks a lot.

My grandfather,Rocco (sometimes called John) Desderide, immigrated from Neirone and lived to be 105 years old. My grandmother was Caterina Carmella from somewhere near Neirone. Grandfather was a foundling and often told me about the "big house" in Genoa - evidently an orphanage. How he arrived in Neirone is a story I've now forgotten. I was only 7 years old, living with my Italian grandparents in Ann Arbor,MI. I do know he was either adopted or lived in with the Rosasco family in Neirone. Am thrilled to find your site and somehow feel he led me to it. Will organize all memories of this wonderful man, information gathered sparodically over the years, my visit to beautiful Neirone church and the parish priest at St. Mauritzio church. Hopefully, through your spectacular web site, I will be able to find more information about Rocco and Caterina Carmella as well as Paul Rosasco.

Dear Anthony,
After taking a hiatus (going on 4 years now), I felt compelled to return to this site and impart information that's been long overdue. First, a belated Happy New Year to you and yours, and accolades are in order for the simple reason that you are perhaps, unaware, how your efforts are making a difference in some people's lives. And so I'm letting you know that my first entry to your guestbook(dated Jan. 13/00)resulted in my father (Luigi Guarnieri)to connect for the first time, with cousins from California, relatives that were until now, an enigma and a latent memory. The connection prompted new found relatives, Louann and Nancy to make the trek up to Toronto (July/03)and the meeting was nothing short of awesome and no doubt, a kindred experience. This year we hope to make it more substantial, and are planning to fly down to meet the entire clan. I must say that my father (now 81) is a changed man as a result of all this, after residing here san the meeting was nothing short of awesome and no doubt, a kindred experience. This year we hope to make it more substantial, and are planning to fly down to meet the entire clan. I must say that my father (now 81) is a changed man as a result of all this, after residing here sans relatives for over 3Oyrs.
And so a heart-felt thank you to you, from all of us and sincere wishes for continued success with this site.
But before I sign off, you will also be proud to know (as I am) that this Guarnieri had the priviledge and honour to meet veteran Hollywood actor Nick Mancuso (one of my all time favourite)and was made President of the "Nick Mancuso Canadian Fan Club" here in Toronto in Sept/03. You might recognize the name/face if you go to these websites:
www.nickmancuso-germany.com and www.nickmancuso-france.com. You might also remember him from a great series in the late eighties, on NBC called "Stingray",
where Mr. Mancuso played "Ray" a mysterious loner-samaritan who went around helping people in crisis and would only ask for favours in return, in lieu of payment. You might also recognize him in "UnderSeige I & II" with Steven Segal. In his 35 year tenure in Hollywood he's also worked with some big names such as Kim Bassinger, Charlton Heston, Kim Cattrall, Oliver Stone and Carrie Ann Moss (over 100 films and too many stars to list here). At present, I am trying to get Mr. Mancuso nominated for a "Star" on Canada's Walk Of Fame (similar to the sidewalk at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in L.A.) and would like to enlist your help and any Guarnieri that would be interested in voting and helping with this endeavour. The website is www.canadaswalkoffame.com (go to "nominations"). In future, I plan to further honour the actor in a documentary and would welcome any advice on how to raise funds or embark on this challenge. Anyone that wishes to contribute would receive a copy of the film and a movie credit.
This entry should be good for another 4 years, hats off to you Anthony and thanks again.

This label is inside the f hole on the left side of the violin looking at it from the top.The label also has the cross with the IHS under it which in greek stands for Jesus.IHS means In His Service. Congratulations for the Guarniero's Page. My grandfather - Manueto Guarniero - was born in Italy, in the Megliadino di San Vitale (Padova) - Veneto Region, and came for the first time to Brazil in 1870 where he constituted a grand family with twelve children. Their parents were named Angelo Guarniero and Elena Scolari. This is a very great coincidence with Anthony's family. It seems that we would be relatives. I live with my wife Esmeralda and my sons - Jose Roberto and Francisco- in Sao Paulo city, Brazil. Congratulations again for this important work for us.

I have a Josef Guarnerius fecit + Cremonae anno 1736 IHS
violin. It belonged to my late husband's father. Am no too sure of history, other than it has been in the family 100+ years. Would appreciate ANY information on this particular violin. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

What a pleasure to find into the web a page that contains so many infos about your origins! :-) I'm a member of this GREAT "clan", and I live in Sicily. I'm trying to rebuild a genealogy of my family, but I can only reach 3-4 generations before. I know that a brother of my granfather (Guarnieri Vincenzo Luigi), moved to Argentina and there died about 15 years ago. He had 5 (I guess)sons.I know the name of one of them:Juanita. All the people of my family were born here in Sicly, but a part of them movd to Florence and a part to USA. So I'd like to find out more of all my/your family:help me!
Arrivederci,
Luigi Guarnieri

Ricardo Villamans Contreras.
