Greetings!
An "attic" violin to be sure. Would appreciate information as to next step in getting the violin appraised. Apparently it was done over 20 yrs ago and was valued at $3500 US. It does have a label in it that reads Joseph Guarnerius del Gesu, Cremona and under it reads Fecit ano 1742 with the "42" being had lettered. There is no sign of what is taken to be the signatory mark of the cross. Perhaps someone would be kind enough to suggest where I go from here. Interestingly, the violin comes in a wooden case with the name R. H. Gray. inscribed on a metal plate on the lower portion and on the upper portion, the lid, another metal plate is inscribed with the words, "The Maidstone" and underneath it the name, "John G. Murdoch & Co. Ltd. London.
Thanks for your help. Larry
