Robert,
It sounds like you may have a violin that was made by a Guarnieri in Cremona. You can go to the Barnes and Noble website and purchase a book that will show you how to authenticate violins. I came across it today as i was looking something up for someone about a piece of music for a violin. I do know that Cremona is where many violin makers worked and made their violins.
